When we all thought harmattan will be on a complete hiatus, it did a comeback. Three days ago, harmattan season came unexpectedly and it’s necessary to know how to stay healthy during harmattan season.
Harmattan is known for its cool, dust-laden, and harsh dryness. It occurs between the end of November and post-March. Harmattan may be harsh, but it has its benefits. Some of which are:

- It could preserve foods and it is sleepy weather.
Like every other thing as two sides (good and bad), this dry season comes with its downside. Our body reacts differently during this season, often characterized by dry skin and chapped lips.
Due to dust particles floating in the air, there are chances of influenza and the common cold. Research also states that this cold weather can increase coronavirus cases. So it is advisable to take care of your health during this period.
Tips On How To Stay Healthy During Harmattan Season
1. Stay Hydrated

During harmattan season, there is likely to be high humidity which causes loss of body moisture. So try to drink a lot of water to remain hydrated. If possible, stay clear of diuretics drinks such as coffee or tea as diuretics hastens water excretion from our bodies.
2. Observe Skincare Routine
Dry skin is one characteristic of harmattan affecting the body. It is therefore important to regularly moisturize the skin especially exposed parts such as hands, legs, and even the hair. Try to use an oil-based moisturizer such as shea butter, coconut oil, Vaseline, etc. Have a lip balm or gloss handy o exfoliate dry chapped lips this season brings.
3. Protect Your Body

Cover your body well during this period. Wear thick clothes at all times. Put on sunglasses and wear a protective mask. Harmattan period is known to trigger sickle cell crises, so try to cover yourself and your loved one during this season. Since there is an increase in cold infections (coronavirus inclusive), so protect your body at all times.
4. Eat Healthily
Eating healthy of course is not to be only taken seriously during this period. Try to eat proper healthy foods, most importantly fruits. Fruits are a good source of vitamins and minerals which would keep bodies healthy during harmattan.
